Multitasking on your iPhone just got a major upgrade. As of May 2026, YouTube has officially rolled out Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for free to all users globally. Whether you’re checking emails, scrolling through social media, or taking notes, you can now keep your favorite YouTube videos playing in a small, floating window.
PiP allows you to shrink a YouTube video into a small thumbnail that sits on top of other applications. You can move the window to any corner of your screen, resize it, or even tuck it away to the side to listen to the audio only.
Getting started is incredibly simple. You don’t need to toggle any complex settings; it’s designed to work intuitively with iOS gestures:
While PiP is now free for general content (vlogs, tutorials, gaming, news), there is one catch. Music videos still require a YouTube Premium subscription to use Picture-in-Picture. If you try to swipe away during a music video without Premium, the video will pause.
For years, PiP was a feature locked behind a paywall or limited to specific regions. By making this feature free globally, YouTube is bringing the iPhone experience in line with modern multitasking needs, making it easier than ever to learn, laugh, and watch on the go.
Have you tried the new PiP feature yet? Let us know your favorite way to multitask in the comments below!
You can use these prompts in an AI image generator (like Midjourney, DALL-E, or Canva AI) to create visuals for your post:

Frame 2: An arrow pointing upward from the bottom of the phone. Frame 3: The home screen with a small floating video window in the corner. Professional, vibrant colors, minimalist style.
Prompt: A digital art banner for a tech blog. Large, bold text that reads “YouTube PiP: FREE FOR EVERYONE.” In the background, a collage of floating video windows showing various content like gaming, cooking, and tech reviews. Use a color palette of YouTube Red, white, and sleek dark grey.
