Android 17 is Google’s next major mobile operating system, officially announced at Google I/O 2026 with the internal codename Cinnamon Bun. The stable release is expected to roll out in June 2026, starting with Pixel devices first
Gemini Intelligence is the biggest addition in Android 17. Google is deeply embedding AI throughout the entire OS to handle more complex tasks than ever before. One standout capability is AI-powered widget creation ā simply describe what you want, and Gemini pulls data from your Google apps to generate a personalized widget, such as a multi-timezone world clock or a daily calorie tracker. These widgets will also sync across Wear OS watches and Googlebooks.
šļø Rambler ā Smarter Dictation Rambler is a new dictation tool that removes filler words automatically, fixes mistakes as you speak, and naturally understands context changes ā making voice input genuinely useful for the first time.
š¬ Screen Reactions ā For Creators Screen Reactions lets you record yourself and your screen simultaneously, overlaying your reaction directly onto any clip ā no third-party app, no green screen required. It’s rolling out first on Pixel devices.
āøļø Pause Point ā Digital Wellbeing Pause Point is a new Digital Wellbeing tool that adds a 10-second pause screen when you open a distracting app. During the pause, you can do a breathing exercise, set a timer, or look at a favorite photo. Turning it off requires a full phone restart ā the friction is intentional.
š Advanced Security Android 17 strengthens protection with Advanced Protection mode that blocks non-accessibility apps from misusing accessibility access, disables device-to-device unlocking, and adds scam detection for chat notifications. On-device AI will also flag apps that silently forward SMS messages or hide and run in the background.
š® Native Game Controller Remapping Android 17 finally introduces native controller remapping at the system level, so users can customize buttons, sticks, and triggers without depending on individual games or apps to support it.
Google released Android 17 Beta 1 in February 2026, with the stable version expected between June and July 2026 starting with Pixel devices. Most flagship phones from 2024ā2026 are expected to receive the update, including recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z series, Google Pixel 6 and newer, Xiaomi flagships, and newer OnePlus phones.
Samsung is expected to ship Android 17 as part of One UI 9, while Xiaomi is currently testing it under HyperOS 3.3. Mid-range devices will follow later in 2026 or early 2027 depending on the brand.
