Major new features in Zabbix 8.0

Zabbix is the upcoming next major LTS release focused on observability, scalability, UI improvements, and network telemetry. It builds on Zabbix 7.4 and introduces both monitoring enhancements and a broader observability platform direction.

Major new features in Zabbix 8.0

Observability & OpenTelemetry

One of the biggest changes is native observability support:

  • OpenTelemetry data collection
  • Trace visualization
  • Log-based observability
  • New scalable telemetry storage engine
  • Better support for streaming and tracing data

This pushes Zabbix beyond classic infrastructure monitoring into APM-style monitoring.

New Mobile App

Official mobile application for:

  • iOS
  • Android

Features include:

  • Push notifications
  • Problem management
  • Historical data access
  • Multi-server support

Planned together with the 8.0 LTS release.

Advanced Event Correlation (CEP Engine)

New Complex Event Processing engine:

  • Event deduplication
  • Automated event closure
  • Severity/tag modification
  • Pattern matching
  • JavaScript-based processing
  • Time-window logic

Useful for:

  • SIEM
  • Fraud detection
  • Alert noise reduction
  • Enterprise alarm consoles

Network Monitoring Improvements

New network-focused capabilities:

  • NetFlow collection & visualization
  • Streaming telemetry support
  • Better visualization for switches/routers
  • Improved network dashboards

Especially useful for enterprise network teams.

Dashboard & Visualization Improvements

New Scatter Plot Widget

Shows correlation between two metrics visually.

Example:

  • CPU vs memory usage
  • Network latency vs packet loss

Graph Widget Enhancements

New features:

  • Y-axis inversion
  • Better hover tooltips
  • Highlight selected graphs
  • Unlimited tooltip items
  • Widget-to-widget communication

Dashboard Export & Import

You can now:

  • Backup dashboards
  • Move dashboards between servers
  • Share dashboards easily

Supported formats:

  • YAML
  • JSON
  • XML

JSON Native Support

Zabbix now supports native JSON item types:

  • Up to 128 MiB
  • JSON validation
  • Better preprocessing
  • Easier API monitoring

Very useful for:

  • REST APIs
  • Cloud monitoring
  • Modern applications

Frontend/UI Improvements

New UI improvements include:

  • Embedded modern fonts
  • Inline validation
  • Better tooltips
  • Modal configuration windows
  • Improved tag visibility
  • PostgreSQL failover support

The frontend is becoming cleaner and more modern compared to older versions.

Plugin & Template Updates

Updated plugins:

  • Ceph
  • MongoDB
  • Oracle
  • Redis (TLS support)
  • MySQL
  • PostgreSQL
  • Proxmox
  • Microsoft 365

Release Timeline

According to the roadmap:

  • Zabbix 8.0 LTS is planned for Q3 2026.

My recommendation

If your environment is:

  • Large enterprise
  • Multi-site
  • Cloud-native
  • Heavy network monitoring
  • API/microservice based

then Zabbix 8.0 will be a significant upgrade.

But for production environments, it is better to wait for:

  • Stable LTS release
  • Mature templates/plugins
  • Upgrade documentation
  • Community feedback after release

especially if you currently run critical monitoring on 6.0 or 7.0 LTS.
