Starting August 2, 2026, the European Union will begin enforcing the “transparency” section of its AI Act so that users clearly know whether they are talking to an AI or viewing AI-generated images.
• AI developers must inform users that they are interacting with AI, not a human.
• Audio, images, video, and text generated by AI must include digital identifiers so machines can detect them.
• Platforms using AI must label deepfake content so viewers are aware.
• Non-compliance could result in fines up to €15 million or 3% of a company’s total annual global revenue.
• Existing services have until December 2 to comply with this law.
[Insight: AI labels will become common on Facebook and TikTok. However, do not rely solely on labels, as fake content originating from outside Europe may still remain unlabeled.]
